Through consistent and meticulous observation of children, Dr. Montessori developed pedagogical theories that have withstood the test of time and science. Her fundamental tenets are the basis for Riversong’s curriculum. These key principles include:

Mixed-age classrooms where children can learn from one another: Montessori believed this structure has great influence on the cultural development of the child. "This is obtained by the relations of the children among themselves. You cannot imagine how well a young child learns from an older child; how patient the older child is with the difficulties of the younger.”

Freedom within limits. Children are free use the entire classroom and choose activities of interest to them so long as they handle them respectfully, receive an initial presentation of the material.

Uninterrupted block of time to “work” where the children may choose what to do and spend as much time as they need with any material. This allows children to establish deep concentration and experience great leaps in cognitive development.

The "prepared environment" which is the concept that the environment is carefully designed to facilitate maximum independent learning and exploration by the child. The teacher is the dynamic link between the environment and the child.
